Jesus Christ Superstar
by Mike Keating on Wednesday, 26th of March 2014

Believe it or not, I think I was positively influenced to consider the claims of Jesus on my life by the rock opera “Jesus Christ Superstar”. I was heavily into music in my wild days and was probably a strong area of bondage. Your music does control your inner life at so many levels. Some of the songs are just classics. And why I would now be fussy over the representation of Jesus, I think that it at least got me to rethink this Jesus of Nazareth.

There is a scene in the movie version where Jesus is ‘attacked’ by lepers seeking their miracle cure. You can check it out if you like and watch it below.

When I saw this as a young 16 rebel, I was actually really bothered by it. I suppose I could sense the absolute powerless of the “Jesus” person to meet the massive needs of those around Him.

There are many days I feel so overwhelmed as a pastor. The need is great. The resources are few. I am limited. The demands are not. Despite working long hours, often missing meals, getting home late, there is incredible pressure to respond to the pleas for help, administration, staff and financial burdens. I must admit that I feel very inadequate and I live with permanent failure. I can really understand the Apostle Paul:

"We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed." (2Co 4:8-9 NIV)

I have learned to live with my limitations. There is a grace where we slowly but surely realise that we are not God, but He is. It is our task to relax in faith that God will see us through despite our efforts and weaknesses. This is living out the expensive life of trust. We can only do what we do because of the gift of life, the breath of God, the animation of the Holy Spirit, the empowering through prayer, and the persistence of the patient.

So I try to stay in my 3B’s. Biblical, balanced and buoyant. Here is the staying power for those who are impossible trying to do the impossible.
